The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E-Performance Revealed With Too Much Power


The Mercedes-AMG E-Performance division which was first announced with the introduction of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG One, has revealed the brand’s first ever hybrid performance model. This is something similar to the Porsche E-hybrid variants and it is meant to rival the Stuttgart adversary. However, its purpose is solely to showcase the abilities of a hybrid powertrain in the performance aspect. Back in April, AMG revealed two hybrid powertrains. One is consists of a 4-cylinder engine and the other is a V8 engine, the AMG GT 63 S E-Performance automatically receives the latter given that the model it is based on has an 8-cylinder block.

We’ll jump in to the figures straight away because that is the talking point of this reveal. The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is mated to a 150 kW electric motor and in total it produces 843 hp (620 kW) and 1400 Nm of torque sent to all four wheels via the 4Matic+ system. That translates to a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 2.9 seconds and reaching 0-200 km/h in less than 10 seconds, with a top speed of 316 km/h. This is achievable thanks to the instant torque produced by the electric motor and it starts by sending most of the power to the rear wheels, then to the fronts when traction is required.


The type of motor used is a permanently excited synchronous variant and to explain its workings in simple terms would be by saying that it relies on magnets to turn the rotor, which spins at the same speed as the motor’s internal rotating magnetic field, giving it the ability to control the power factor. The electric motor is situated on the rear axle and it puts weight on the axle to improve handling on the backend of the car.


The electric motor’s 150 kW peak output is only available for ten seconds acting as an extra boost during launch control and thereafter is 70 kW continuous output. That’s made possible through the two-speed gearbox with the first gear used for going off the line and the second gear engaging at speeds from 140 km/h and beyond. The 6.1 kWh battery pack powering the electric motor weighs 89 kilograms and provides a range of 12 km on electric power alone and can reach speeds of up to 130 km/h.


The regenerative braking system has levels from 0 to 3 to recuperate energy during braking. When the driver selects the level 3 setting, they will be able to accelerate and brake with only one pedal whilst feeding up to 100 kW power back to the batteries. This creates an easy driving experience which may feel weird at first and take time to get used to.

There is not much to say about the exterior look because this comes in the facelifted package which includes a redesigned front apron and new 19 to 21-inch wheels designs with aero-purpose optional wheels on offer. The E-Performance badging is on the front fenders next to the gills and the ‘S’ badge is in red and next to the GT 63 S badge. The interior features a new double spoke AMG steering wheel and the latest MBUX infotainment system. The overall look is quite subtle and it will be hard to differentiate it from the normal variant when spotting it on the road but there is square cut out for the charging port on the rear bumper positioned on the right side and that could make it easy to spot it.


We can expect more models to be launched under the E-Performance brand and those that have been already confirmed are the C63e and the S63e AMG.
