The Polo GTI Is Unveiled

The Polo recently received a facelift and so has the GTI, SA’s beloved hot hatchback. We have to admit that it has dominated the segment it’s in for quite a while now and most of its competition has bowed out altogether from the South African Market. The Ford Fiesta ST, the Renault Clio RS, not even the new Hyundai i20 N dares to make an appearance. So, you’d think a mild makeover would just be satisfyingly enough for Volkswagen to call it a day? Not at all because it has been beautified and crammed with the latest tech and features.

This is just a quick overview of what one may expect from the facelift and it is all similar to the normal Polo. It gets IQ.Drive Travel Assist that can do the steering, braking and accelerating at speeds of up to 210 km/h with the help of the standard lane assist and optional Adaptive Cruise Control. The latest infotainment system now with an 8-inch touchscreen and accompanied by the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, comes with WeConnect Plus. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now wireless.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine also gets a boost in power which now produces 204 hp (152 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. All the power goes to the front wheels and it is shifted through a 7-speed DSG transmission.

The exterior sees an exciting change with the front receiving the IQ.Light module with matrix LED headlights and it can be spotted with the bar light on the upper radiator grille. The GTI specific bumper has been redesigned with a bit of grunt added to it and the fog lights shaped in honeycomb style. The side profile can be seen with 17-inch wheels as standard and an upgrade to 18-inch wheels is available. The rear has newly designed LED taillights, twin exhaust tailpipes and a somewhat body-colored diffuser.

The cabin follows a GTI theme of Black, Red and Grey colour combo that can be seen on the instrument panel, dashboard, seats and gear knob. The optional Beats sound system with 300 watts and six speakers is available.

The facelifted Polo GTI is set to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022.
