Month after month, prototypes after prototypes, jumping from one tease to another and finally, Rimac has unveiled the Nevera which remains a heavily developed Concept Two but let’s just get that out of the way. So, this is an electric hypercar with a bunch of electric motors and over 1000 hp at its disposal, nothing new about it as many such as this have revealed those stats like the Lotus Evija. However, unlike the latter, the Nevera actually works and is production ready.
The name of the car ‘Nereva’ is dubbed as the reflection of the prodigious performance the car can unleash in the blink of an eye and you better believe them on that as several on YouTube videos have revealed its sub 2 seconds sprint time and a quarter-mile time of under 8 seconds. The combination of downforce, lightness and low-end torque of the electric motors results in a dish that is delicate yet shoves an immense scorching taste. This is a recipe that will excite you on paper and when it is time to experience the car. Its incredible performance seems like we are nearing the peak of what cars can be capable of and it brings out the question of whether it is necessary to keep going and increasing power or end it here.
First we need to discuss what propels this spaceship, and it’s all a familiar concept but with a few differences here and there. This electric powertrain has been used before on other Rimac models and for the Nevera it has been reworked with four electric motors on each wheel and two single-speed gearboxes on each axle. The 120 kWh battery pack is positioned at the very lowest point of the chassis in an H-shaped cell configuration which improves the centre of gravity, and the battery’s temperatures are managed through liquid cooling solutions.
The power output is way beyond what many car manufacturers could ever achieve, being with an engine or other means of powering a car because the Croatian boys have managed to extract 1914 hp (1427 kW) and 2360 Nm of torque, and the maximum power is available on your right foot most of the time as they state that the electric motors are 97% efficient and completely maintenance-free throughout their operating life, no need for a wrench in the boot.
With that amount of power, obviously that brings incredible performance figures and a range of 547 kilometres on a single charge. The 0-100 km/h time is done in 1.97 seconds, 0-161 km/h in 4.3 seconds and 0-300 km/h in 9.3 seconds. The top speed is 402 km/h which is on par with most petrol-powered hypercars and this makes the Nevera the fastest electric production car by top speed and the second fastest accelerating production car on the market, but wait there’s more. The quarter-mile time it set is 8.62 seconds, the fastest of any car available on sale.
The car came in bold, set a benchmark and made a statement that should stand until the next manufacturer responds. Furthermore, it has adapted several chassis implementations fusing the liquid cooling system with the carbon monocoque adding 37% to the overall stiffness, the battery pack being shifted a bit to the rear of the car accounts for a 48/52 front/rear weight distribution, enough to give the rear wheels more grip and the All-Wheel Torque Vectoring system does a precise distribution of torque to all wheels and overall improving handling and stability.
The first Rimac being the Concept One was revealed back in 2011, laying the groundwork design of the company’s future models and the Nevera encompasses that design lively, only with a deployable rear wing. To make it as slippery as possible while punching through the air, they had to be smart with crafting the shape of the body panels. This includes the bonnet, inlets and cooling channels, splitters, and diffusers, leading to a 34% improvement in the overall downforce and aerodynamic works.
The drag coefficient is 0.3 thanks to the active underbody flap, rear diffuser and rear wing which can change the car’s characteristics from high downforce to low downforce. The lightness comes in a form of bonding the carbon roof, battery pack and rear carbon subframe to make one unit that weighs less than 200 kilograms. Stopping power is achieved by 390 mm Brembo carbon-ceramic brake discs and six-piston calipers which work in hand with the regenerative braking system that provides 300 kW from the electric motors.
The car will come with something called the ‘AI Driver Coach’ that will help drivers to extract the maximum performance from the Nevera and leave no stone unturned. It uses 12 ultrasonic sensors, 13 cameras and 6 radars to collect all the driving data and ‘coach’ the driver on how to drive better.
The trend of triple screens in the cabin seemed to have found its way to the Nevera with one being the instrument cluster featuring a cockpit layout for both comfort and track mode. The centre infotainment screen has a wide array of features including the display for the climate control and the third screen is for the passenger to view the speed because the immense acceleration will push the passenger into their seat and there won’t be time to lean over to view it from the driver’s screen, only from the display in front of them.
Apart from the screens, the driver is met with aluminium rotary controls and switches and real-time telemetry that is downloadable to a laptop or smartphone.
Only 150 examples will be made and each will cost €2 million (R33 631 720).
