The car that Toyota created to resurrect the pure car culture enthusiasm still lives on with the same glorious recipe that comprises of a naturally aspirated engine, rear-wheel drive and a sweet manual gearbox. It was no surprise that the GT 86 did so well in terms of sales with more than 200 000 units sold worldwide during its production period. People missed this kind of setup and approaching the budget sports car segment nowadays needs a car manufacturer to be bold.
The new GR 86 now falls under the Gazoo Racing division and serves as the third model joining the brilliant GR Yaris and GR Supra. The whole lot carry a significant respect from customers as they have been well established and have proved to be the best amongst their rivals. Just like its twin brother, the Subaru BRZ, the GR 86 gets a totally different exterior look with some tweaks on its internals.
One thing about this new body is that it falls right in the middle in terms of design satisfaction. It’s not all up in your face and not ugly at all, at every angle there is no fault, it’s just perfect. As you start at the front of the car, you sport the GR specific Matrix Grille which is a different look from the BRZ and it’s there for distinction. The suspension has been lowered to give the car a much hunkered down look, the rear wheel arches also add to that prospect.
Moving to the side of the car there are some mean, black 18-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin tyres. The sporty side skirts have been well sculptured to match the body creases whilst the rear end houses two tailpipes. There is an extensive usage of aluminium to keep the weight down and those areas include the fender and mufflers whilst the roof has it to keep the center of gravity lower.
The engine bay sings the, “there is no replacement for displacement” line as they have decided to increase the engine from 2.0 litres to 2.4 litres, none of that turbocharging trend has found its way to the GR 86. It is still a boxer setup with the cylinder walls laid horizontally and they have managed to extract 232 hp (173 kW) of power with 250 Nm of torque available fruitfully on this free revving block. It’s available with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic.
The body is said to be 50% more stiffer than its predecessor and together with a McPherson Strut front suspension and Double Wishbone rear suspension, this promises a much stable and agile driving experience.
The interior styling stays on the basic side with everything situated at the right place, physical buttons for controls and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, this being a sporty car there are some red accents on the seats and door panels with contrasting red stitching on the gear shift, handbrake lever, steering wheel and armrest. The GR 86 also comes with Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology which consists of various safety features such as pre-collision warning and emergency rescue support.
It has only been confirmed that it will launch in September in Japan but we are still waiting for an announcement from Toyota South Africa on whether we will receive it.
