The Audi S3 has finally taken off its covers and it is available in hatchback and sedan form with the usual recipe of sporty looks, Quattro all-wheel drive, four pipes, and surprisingly the same engine. Audi went ahead and used the same 2.0-litre TSFi 4-Cylinder engine from the predecessor with the same 310 hp (228 kW) output and 400 Nm of torque, part of the reason could be the formula just works well and the engine may be well amped up for better response in this newer model. It now has a finer chassis update from the VW MQB platform and it should be much stiffer and agile.
The engine is mated to a 7-speed S-Tronic transmission which is said to be much sharper and quicker with shifting and the claimed 4.8 Seconds 0-100 km/h sprint time is for both models with a limited top speed of 250 km/h. There is an optional S-specific sport suspension with damper control which alleviates the ride and the standard suspension has been lowered by 15 mm giving it a sportier stance look and speaking of looks, the S3 has quite the update. The front gets an aggressive black accent grille, black mirror caps, black side skirts, standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 19-inch wheels as an option and an aggressive rear end with quad exhaust tailpipes.
The matrix LED lights come as an option and have 15 individual LED segments for better lighting. Both models come with two limited edition colours which are Typhon Red worn by the S3 Sedan on these press images and Python Yellow on the S3 hatchback.
The inside has been sprinkled with sportiness and you’ll first notice that with the flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in leather, sports seats and aluminium paddles. In front of the driver’s seat is a standard 10.25-inch digital cluster but can be upgraded to a 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit with a “plus” version. The 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen has the new modular infotainment platform system which is said to be ten times faster than the previous version and has integrated WiFi Hotspot. Audi has thrown some safety features into the mix like adaptive cruise assist and park assist.
The Audi S3 Sportback and S3 Sedan are available for pre-order purchases in selected European countries and we are yet to hear when it will arrive in South Africa.
