From Toyota comes the new Yaris! Okay, we know that doesn’t sound very much exciting, but what if I told you that this Yaris makes more power than a Golf GTi. This is the new Toyota model created in collaboration with Toyota’s racing division “Gazoo Racing” and the World Rally partner “Tommi Makinen Racing”. What they have done is taken an everyday small economical hatchback and made it insane. From all angles, this looks brutal and gorgeous.
There are flared wheel arches, 18-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, twin sports tailpipes and a very aggressive front bumper. All of these visual body kits are not for show but serve a purpose for aerodynamics. The doors and bonnet are made out of aluminium to keep the weight down and they have achieved that quite exceptionally as it weighs just 1280 kg.
The GR Yaris is powered by a 1.6-litre turbopetrol 3-cylinder which doesn’t sound like much but it produces an incredible 257 hp (192 kW) and 320 Nm of torque and to sweeten the deal it is mated to a 6-speed manual. That’s right, the manual gearbox lives on and will not die in the hands of the automatic transmission. It can do 0-100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 230 km/h.
To make the GR Yaris a rally car for the road, it has been fitted with four-wheel drive which can send 60% of the power to the front-axle in normal mode but put it in sport mode then the rear-axle suddenly gets 70% of the power.
The suspension has been treated with sporty tinkering as the rear-axle gets double wishbone for improved handling and agility. When you get the Circuit Pack option, your GR Yaris will be fitted with a Torsen limited-slip differential which manages the split of power between the rear-left wheel and rear-right wheel which improves cornering. This is truly the works of wizardry coming from the GR division which has also helped with the development of the current Toyota Supra A90.
The GR Yaris has not yet been confirmed for South Africa but Toyota SA is still considering an introduction of it to SA shores. The Toyota GR Yaris is one of those cars that must be appreciated and it will sure as well drive like a champ.
