The magicians at Mercedes-AMG have finally unveiled their latest offering to the hot hatchback, if not hyper-hot hatchback segment because the latest A45 S and CLA 45 S have some ridiculous power figures from such a small engine. The A45 S AMG made its official public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Motoring and everyone was amazed by its appealing yellow colour but it looks way better in its grey colour or smoked black on its official release images.
For quite a while, Mercedes-AMG has been teasing the newly developed M139 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine, which is a successor of the M133 from the previous 45 AMG models. We all knew that the new engine will power their upcoming 45 models and the latest cars to receive the most powerful 2.0 liter 4 cylinder in the world are the A45 and CLA 45. The RS3 hot hatchback has been leading the segment with its 294 kW 2.5 liter 5-cylinder turbo engine for a very long time but now it’s time for a new king to step in, or should I say kings!
The A35 hatchback was revealed several months ago and that is just a less expensive baby AMG model to rival cars like the Golf R and Audi S3. However, the new A45 S and CLA 45 S are in a completely different territory, both are powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder with 416 hp (310 kW) & 500 Nm of torque whereas the normal entry-level A45 and CLA 45 have a downsize of power, just 382 hp (285 kW) & 480 Nm of torque.
The A45 S and CLA 45 S performance figures are amazing, with both cars hitting 0-100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and have a limited top speed of 250 km/h. The non-bearing S models can do that in just 4.0 seconds, only 0.1 seconds off.
Mercedes-AMG has managed to make the exterior of these cars quite distinctive from the normal A-Class and CLA-Class, and not forgetting the A35 and CLA 35. One unique feature that stands out is the AMG Panamericana grille on the front with a very aggressive deep front bumper. The rear is complimented by quad exhausts which look very real unlike the previous quad trapezoidal exhaust tips on the A45 and looked fake from a standpoint. The A45 S gets its famous aero wing spoiler which is super awesome and the CLA 45 S has your typical boot spoiler strip. Both cars get 19-inch AMG wheels as standard on S models.
In the interior department, everything seems to look quite familiar. I’m saying that in comparison to the 35 models but there are some unique finishing touches you’ll find in the A45 S and CLA 45 S. For instance, there is an AMG specific tachometer which can be changed into different viewing perspectives for your own personal taste. There are features you can use to record track day things such as your lap times and 0-100 km/h sprint time. The paddle shifters are finished in aluminium and that enables you to shift quickly on its 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The 4Matic+ comes as standard and you can now get drift mode as an option. So this enables you to tail slide your all-wheel drive hot hatch by sending most of the power to the rear wheels. Unlike the drift mode in the E63 S AMG, this doesn’t completely become rear-wheel drive only at a touch of a button. It only fiddles with the rear differential to enable the car to become slippery, almost similar to the drift button in the Focus RS which did not work quite exceptionally.
The new A45 S AMG is my favourite hatchback now that it has received quite an insane amount of power. There is a lot to question about the upcoming competitors that will face off against this monster. The one I know about is the upcoming Audi RS3 and I heard a rumour that it will be revealed sometime this year, probably in November. The other car to look out for is the upcoming M140i which I suspect will use the M2 competition pack engine but then it sounds ridiculous and insane and well, BMW these days can surprise you with anything, so you should have an open mind and better be prepared.
We are expecting the new A45 S and CLA 45 S to land in SA in September. They might probably arrive with the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door coupe. The guys at Mercedes-AMG have really answered a lot of people’s prayers, the A45 S and CLA 45 S has exceeded everyone’s expectations. Welcome to the hyper-hot hatchback territory!
