Tesla Motors has finally unveiled its newest car, the Model Y. On March 14, the CEO of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, showcased the Tesla Model Y to the public saying that it will be much popular than any other Tesla Model ever made and he is absolutely right. Many people are eager to get their hands on the much-anticipated Model Y. It will join the Tesla Model range consisting the Model S, Model 3, Model X and Roadster. I’ve just noticed that the Tesla Model names spell out S3XY which can easily be seen as the word ‘Sexy’, how hilarious!

Anyway, the Model Y has similar design elements like the Model 3. It’s considered a Model 3 crossover and a baby Model X. Like all Tesla Models, the body is of course very much aerodynamic and shapes the car very beautifully. It has a low center of gravity which provides a decent amount of downforce and the body structure is rigid for improved safety. The Model Y has a very unique body style and I thought a beefed up Model 3 wouldn’t look good but it certainly does.

The Model Y comes with either one electric motor on the rear wheel drive spec model or dual electric motors on the all-wheel drive spec model. There are four different spec models that you can go for and each has different performance features. The spec models are the Standard Range, Long Range, Long Range AWD, and Performance.

I just want to point out how special Tesla Motors is to the automotive industry and how it made electric cars become so cool and popular. Most car enthusiasts don’t like the idea of silence from the rear but look at it this way, saving the environment has become a big priority and now you can save it in style. Tesla has even influenced other big automotive giants like Audi, Mercedes Benz, and BMW to go full electric and that shows how big their impact on the future of cars is.

MY-Underside

When it comes to interiors, Tesla oozes with simplicity and not waste time which design creases. All you get in the Model Y’s cockpit is a big 15-inch touchscreen and a large panoramic glass roof, that’s it. No buttons in the interior, all the features are controlled on the touchscreen. Because it is a 7-seater car, the 3rd-row seat can be folded for more boot space. I’m not so sure if the 3rd-row seat passengers will have enough legroom because it looks a bit cramped. The Model Y features some nice tech like the 360-degree camera system, collision warning, and blind spot assist.

One feature that I’m very interested in is the Full Self-Driving Capability. This means that your Model Y will be able to drive itself, not only on highways but also on city streets which I think will be the first production car to do so. But then again government regulations on self-driving cars may restrict the Model Y from doing so. It has also been mentioned that the Model Y will be able to find you and come to you in the parking lot, no need to go to the car, which is absolutely amazing.

If you’re thinking, ‘why do I even need an electric car, it would waste my time when recharging’. Well, the Tesla Model Y can charge 168 miles (270 km) in just 15 minutes using the Tesla supercharger which there are 12,000 charging outlets worldwide.

As for South Africa, just months ago, Elon Musk announced that we will get our very own Tesla Showroom and plans to even sell Tesla cars locally. You can read the story here. The Model Y is surely an interesting car and most of us can’t wait to see how it will rival the German electric cars. We can be sure that the Tesla cars will lead the electric car segment in the future if they keep on coming up with cars like the Model Y.
