From Geneva Motor Show to Los Angeles Auto show, we have seen a significant number of cars released by different automotive manufacturers. We have been washed with cutting edge automotive technology from new cars but on first glance when a new car is revealed, we judge it’s looks. Here are some of our best looking cars revealed this year.

5. 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

Look okay, bear with me… I’m sure you asking yourself why put a mere Toyota model in the Top 5. But you just have to admit that this new Corolla looks really good. Actually surprisingly good looking because you wouldn’t expect such a design from Toyota. It’s called the Corolla because it’s replacing the Auris badge and for me the Auris was just a nice looking car but the Corolla Hatchback looks spectacular. It has various engine variants such as the 2.0 litre 4 cylinder petrol with 125 kW and 200 N•m of torque. This engine will certainly be as punchy as a hot hatchback’s engine which I think also complements the way this car looks.

The idea here was to create a new design language for Toyota which I thought they were doing it with the CH-R but I guess it starts here. All I can say is good job Toyota!

4. Audi Q8

I know what you thinking, just a photocopy of a Lamborghini Urus. Yes, it has some design features of the Lamborghini Urus but this looks way better. On the pictures it looks fat but you should see it in person, it is beautiful. Plus they have fitted frameless doors which make it even more attractive. We have been awaiting Audi to make their own SUV Coupé like the other German car makers from BMW and Mercedes Benz. Unlike the slopping roofline of the rival cars such as the Mercedes Benz GLE Coupé and BMW X6, the Q8 is more of mature SUV with a normal roofline which helps with rear headroom.

The massive 8-sided front grille looks aggressive and this is Audi’s future grille styling. The rear strip tailgate light sums up what a good looking SUV should be like, it’s pretty cool.

3. Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

Everytime Aston Martin releases a car, obviously it will be part of the good looking category. They are the masters of car design, all Aston Martin cars are gorgeous. And now they have released their latest breathtaking model, the DBS Superleggera. Straight away you will get a sense of a mixture of their current model designs on one car. I can see a mixture of DB11 headlights, Rapide AMR front grille, Vantage rear tailgate lights. It’s just beautiful, I love it a lot but it costs a lot of money.

Let me summarize the performance, it has a powerful 5.2 liter twin-turbocharged V12 with 533 kW and 900 N•m of torque, sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. Big ups to Aston Martin!

2. Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

What a huge step up from Alfa Romeo with it’s new models. Alfa Romeo has made some good looking cars such as the 4C and 8C and their recent model, the Giulia. But the best looking Alfa has to be their amazingly gorgeous SUV, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. This looks proper, one of the best car designs ever. I really love this car. The distinctive front grille and body shape. The interior is exquisite and very much sporty but still beautiful. Cars like these set the bar really high and you become surprised as you don’t expect such from a car manufacturer that’s never made an SUV before. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio really shines with performance. It has a 2.9 litre twin-turbocharged V6 with 375 kW and 600 N•m of torque.

It has arrived in South Africa but with a heavy price. It costs R1.8 million and it looks better and performs better than the German rivals but concerning reliability, I’m not so sure.

1. BMW X5 G05

This was obvious from the start. The X5 was not really the best looking car from BMW but the new design is mouth-watering, humble pie on our faces. Not surprisingly enough we have recently crowned the new BMW X5 the 2018 GMAN car reviews Best Looking Car of the Year. We really like how the front looks with a revised massive kidney grille and revamped LED laserlights (optional). The rear tailgate lights are no longer L-shaped but they still look good. You can either choose between the X-line or M-sport trim. The new BMW interior design of the X5 features a 12.3 inch BMW live cockpit, new BMW iDrive infotainment screen and new dash design. Simply gorgeous!

The X5 models that are currently listed for sale are the xDrive30d, with 195 kW, which costs R1 194 296 and the M50d, with 294 kW, which costs R1 502 582. All models come as standard with Active Driver Assistant aids. The BMW X5 is the best looking car of 2018 in our own opinion.

2018 has been a year of some of the best cars. 2019 shall be another great year. We will see what the new year holds for the automotive industry.
