The automotive industry is getting a radical change in how cars will be rather powered by electric power. Over the years automotive giants such as Toyota which is now creating EV cars, have seen the change of creating energy efficient transportation. It was not enough with all this car manufacture’s creations of plug-in-hybrid cars. Most of this cars have limited mileage range and probably will set you aside the road when the battery runs out. Though there is still hope for you “green people”. Since Tesla Motors emerged in 2003, their models such as the Tesla Roadster, The Model S and Model X have seen prominence success in sales.

Now Tesla has released it’s most anticipated Model 3, which is now available for purchase, though it is not available for purchase in South Africa. The Model 3 is a one of a kind car. What sets it apart from it’s relatives is that it comes with rear-wheel drive as a base model.

We like the fact that it was designed to achieve a 5-Star Safety Rating. It also has a very low drag coefficient of 0.24 thanks to it’s very sleek smooth body. The rear-wheel drive base model will have great traction in heavy conditions such as snow because of it’s fast torque response from the electric motor.

Now to talk about the range. The Model 3 has a standard and long range battery model. The standard battery model has a range of  350 km with an aid of a 50 kWh battery. It can sprint from 0-97 km/h in just 5.6 seconds, has a top speed of 210 km/h. It’s all pretty satisfying for an electric car but if you think it’s not enough you can opt for the long-range battery model. This uses a 75 kWh battery which has a range of 540 km. It can sprint from 0-97 km/h in just 5.1 seconds and has a top speed of 225 km/h.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has stated that 20 000 Model’s will be made per month by December 2017, but then now he is dodging the press about his last claims on the production number of the Model 3. Though no reports have approved his claims yet, we are still in the dark about number of Model 3s that will be made.

Anyway enough about that and let’s talk about the interior. Actually there is not much to say because there is only a  big LCD touchscreen mounted on the dash and literally no button to press, like no button at all. The screen has all you need to operate. Sat-Nav, air-condition, radio, gallery etc. Just anything you need.

One of the cool features about the new Model 3 is the updated Tesla Autopilot mode. This allows the driver to simply let the car operate on it’s own. This includes braking, overtaking on the highway, switching turn signals on. But now the system can operate in heavy traffic jams which is a huge relief for drivers. The Model 3 has so many cool features that I cannot even mention.

It is safe to say that the Model 3 can compete with the likes of the BMW 3 series, Audi A4, Mercedes Benz C-Class. The Model 3 is the best car money can buy if you are a green person.

Reason why it has been nominated?

The Model 3 sets it’s rivals in a very confined place as it is energy efficient and it’s performance ranks it very high. It’s fresh, unique and has a very sensible character to it. It’s just very nice. Plus it is the entry to future automotive mobility, say hello to the future with the Tesla Model 3!
